A cool chap named Vospi who I met on Reddit kindly reworked the Clean City Piano. He tightened it up and added a bit of room IR. Now in its fourth version thanks to the help of many folks, I think this is the best the City Piano has ever sounded. It is free and entirely public domain.

Musyng Kite for Kontakt
Sarcyan has created a huge Soundfont called Musyng Kite. At 200 plus instruments and over 6500 samples, I'm glad for Kontakt's fairly easy conversion features. Thanks Native Instruments!
Just so we are on the same page. These are fun, classic, retro sounds. They are not intended to take the place of the sounds on the K5 Factory library. As you can see the piano is 50 megs, while the Salamander Piano available on this site is nineteen times larger and of course you can hear the difference. If you want massively sampled modern sounds this isn't for you. If you want fun sounds, carefully molded by Sarcyan that will give your audio pallet an interesting slightly quirky feel, you will enjoy. There are lots of odd sounds, sound effects, cool vintage synth sounds and just obscure instruments that might be hard to find.
Here is the entire soundfont in one big file. It is sorted in GM order aka piano, chromatic, organs...

Article 22
I redid the Kontakt conversion of the brilliant D Smolkin's cutest creation. It now has 4 velocity layers and release samples and a great script new shell from Mickaël Ménager that lets you kick up an amp right in the instrument along with other cool effects.
Thanks to FLWrd for spotting a couple bad notes. They should now be fixed.
Go to D. Smolkin's site for the SFZ version. Also grab his Basses. All his bass are belong to U.

From the Dman's site
"This is a free download and royalty-free for all commercial and non-commercial use with no restrictions, including redistribution of samples in other forms. In other words, you can even make a Kontakt or VSTi version if you want. But if you do, please keep the GUI cute. "

Thanks for 100K pageviews
Thanks everybody for visiting the blog. We just hit 100,000 pageviews!
Here's a little preview of my next project.
Mattias Westlund created the famous Sonatina Symphony Orchestra in SFZ format and I thought it would be fun to take a shot at converting to Kontakt.
"Licensing

Sonatina Symphony Orchestra for Kontakt
Another Konversion project. This time the legendary Creative Commons LicensedSonatina Symphony Orchestra created by Mattias Westlund. In addition to the samples included in SSO, I've added some samples that Mattias put up on his blog after the release of Sonatina. In Konverting, each instrument will have all articulations included in a single Kontakt instrument.
Allow me to quote from the Sonatina Symphony Orchestra website.
"Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is a free orchestral sample library. While not as advanced or ambitious in scope as commercial offerings, SSO contains all the basic building blocks for creating real virtual orchestrations. It's primarily aimed at beginners, but also more experienced composers looking for something lightweight and/or portable might find it useful."

If you already have the SSO samples, Thorsten Keller was kind enough to create an small 8 meg file that allows you to use the new Kontakt mappings without re downloading the samples. It contains the nkis and the wallpapers. Just point the instrument to your SSO samples folder and then the Wallpaper and save it.

Sasje's Instruments
The fine instrument maker named Sasje has released a number of free Kontakt 5 instruments. Read about them here. She says "My health is seriously deteriorating and I won't be able to create something new or maintain them. Do what you want with them, as long as you don't sell them." So I've put them up on my mediafire account. God bless you Sasje and I pray your health is improving.
I can't emphasize enough, I didn't create these instruments Sasje did. I'm just trying to make sure they continue to be available for folks to download.

Iowa Orchestra
The University of Iowa samples are probably the most famous public domain sounds and fortunately Blackhole12 edited many of them into individual notes. Some of notes are a tad out of tune and eventually I might try to do a bit of tuning on them. Generally I think they sound quite nice and appreciate the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios and their Director, Lawrence Fritts, creating them and making them available as Public Domain samples.
The String section is really the only thing that doesn't work very well at all. Blackhole12 I think gave up on it as there really aren't enough Violin or Cello samples to make an instrument. Fortunately Lawrence Fitts re-recorded the entire string section in 2012. At some point when I'm up to some serious editing work, I'd like to play with them.

GM Midi Instruments for Kontakt
General Midi Sound Set
I'm a bit obsessed with making available all 128 instruments of the General Midi 1Sound Set. This is the sound set that midi files use to recreate music, soundfonts traditionally revolve around them and if you get 128 voice keyboard these are generally the voices it has. It is a standard to make sure that when Instrument 1 is called for it is always Acoustic Grand Piano and not bagpipes or a car crash. Thanks to Sarcyan allowing me to convert his most excellent Musyng Kite Sound Font, I think all 128 sounds are now represented here at old bigcat Instruments and available for Kontakt 5.
Being me, getting all of the GM sound set as instruments for Kontakt calls for a list. A really long list. Initials at the front of the instrument name refers to the maker, see the key at the bottom. If there is more than one instrument that fits the patch, all instruments are listed side by side. Bonus instruments of similar type are included under the more general midi instrument.

bigcat Piano Collection Version 2
Its time to update the Piano Collection. The biggest addition is the Summer Piano recorded from a Yamaha Disklavier Pro with over 800 samples including true sustain samples. Also new to the collection are three lightly sampled acoustic pianos including an Upright and a Fazioli.
Electric Pianos can be found here. Maize VST versions (Non-Kontakt) are here.
The pianos from the first collection have had the NI Piano Pedal Script added to emulated the sustain pedal correctly. A few mistakes have also been corrected.
Thanks to Dave aka Dathyr1 and FrozenJazz for finding many errors for me.
The BIG Four
The Summer Piano has actual sustain samples, so using the sustain pedal should (hopefully) sound very close to what it sounds like on a real piano. It is sampled every third note with roughly 12 to 16 velocity layers for both sustain and non-sustain. The sharp ringing Yamaha sound makes it good for cutting through a pop soundtrack.
Every note is sampled in four velocity layers with per note release samples. I know because I did it myself. Baldwin pianos pop up in homes and churches all over the place, but are rarely sampled because they aren't a prestige brand.
Joe's version is the one I came up with after lots of help from the folks at KVR. It is warm and a bit dirty and sounds pretty analogue for a digital piano.
Vospi's version is a cleaned up version of the Clean Version that Jeff from Critical Vibrations created. How's that for confusing! It is much cleaner and crisper as the you can probably guess.
To me the two sound different enough that you might give each a try.
A bad note was fixed and the Piano Pedals script added.
Public Domain License created from University of Iowa Musical Instrument Samples.
A solid Steinway in under 200 megs. The Iowa has almost every note sampled in three velocity layers. The only real negative is that the tuning is slightly off and can jump a bit between velocity layers. My EDM friends over at Reddit really fell in love with this piano, so I suspect it works well for that genre.
This piano is lightly sampled with only one velocity layer but with that distinctive upright sitting around the house sound. It sounds slightly unlike any other digital piano. It also has very long samples that work nicely to emulate sustain using the NI Piano Pedals Script.
KungKrill sampled his parent's Skerratt London Upright Piano. He says "You are allowed to do whatever you want with the samples." So I suppose it is Public Domain, through crediting KungKrill would be polite.

The BIG Four
Along with the Maestro Grand and the Piano in 162, these are the most fully sampled and best sounding free pianos available for Kontakt.
Summer Piano with no Release Samples - Yamaha Disklavier Pro
Attribution Creative Commons - Please credit The OLPC Project and, if you use the release samples, Alexander HolmFeel.
The OLPC Project has 8.5 gigs of Creative Commons instruments. Dr. Mikhail Krishtal and Zenph Studios recorded well over a 1000 samples of a Yamaha Disklavier Pro including both sustain and non-sustain versions of each note in roughly 12 to 16 velocity layers. I added in the release samples from the Salamander Piano, also a Yamaha, into the piano. you can try it with or without my grafted on release samples. They also have Staccato and when I'm less lazy I'll add those in too.
Creative Commons Attribution License - Please Credit Alexander HolmFeel
One of the most famous free pianos, this Yamaha is sampled in minor thirds from the lowest A with 16 velocity layers. At just a shade under a Gig in size there are a lot of stereo samples and it shows with a good tone and one of the smoothest velocity curves in a free piano.
I've done some correcting on the Salamander. The velocity faded too sharply before and there was a problem with the release samples. These issues have been fixed and the Piano Pedal Script added.
The City Piano Joe's Version - Baldwin Grand, Warm and Dirty
Every note is sampled in four velocity layers with per note release samples. I know because I did it myself. Baldwin pianos pop up in homes and churches all over the place, but are rarely sampled because they aren't a prestige brand.

While taking up only 25 to 50 megs each, these three pianos each have a pleasant and distinctive sound. They include a Fazioli and an Upright, both rare in the free instrument world.
The Musyng Kite Acoustic Grand - Fazioli
Creative Commons Attribution License - Please Credit Sarcyan
Created by Sarcyan for his Musyng Kite soundfont, this is another rarely found piano. This time it is an Italian Fazioli. The company only produces about 125 pianos a year. Sampled every third note (except for the very ends) and in five velocity layers, the piano has a small footprint but a rich sound.
The velocity response is now more corrector and it uses the NI Piano Pedal Script for sustain.
"Licensing - SSO is a free (as in speech, and beer) library released under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 license." Created by Mattias Westlund.
This piano has an interesting resonance. I have no idea who manufactured it or where the samples came from. It is sampled every third note and has two velocity layers. It's main fault is that the notes are just too short.
The Specialty Pianos
This Intimate Piano is derived from the softest layers of the City Piano and is Public Domain. A bad note has been fixed and the Piano Pedal Script added.
Black Winny on Soundcloud said "The nightly ambiance of the most quiet parisian cabarets in 1910 at Montmartre... Lovely! I adore!" Which sums up the sound better than I ever could. Thank you!
A Honky-Tonk Piano also derived from the City Piano and Public Domain. It basically uses samples mistuned by 5 cents both up and down to simulate the tinny sound of the classic barroom piano.
This piano has true sustain samples which the addition of the Piano Pedals script should enhance.

Electric Pianos
One of the weaknesses of bigcat Instruments has been Electric Pianos. After extensive negotiations with Greg Sullivan (I emailed to ask if I could use his samples and he kindly said Yes.) three new pianos join the family. Having read that some EPiano manufacturers are a bit possessive of their brand and instrument names, I decided to use initials to identify the pianos. Better safe than sued.
The Y Piano is a personal favorite. Greg Sullivan sampled roughly every 4 notes and 4 velocity layers on this piano. Just about every pop and rock act in the mid-70s and 80s seemed to have one on stage as it was the closest you could get to a full Grand Piano without breaking the backs of a roadie army.

The H Planet S Piano has a unique sound thanks to its Sticky Reeds. The H is sampled roughly every 4 notes in two velocity layers. The H was on stage for many rock concerts for decades as it was portable and relatively inexpensive. Script and Shell by Mickaël Ménager.
The W Piano is one of the legendary instruments in modern music history. This piano is sampled at roughly every 6 notes in two velocity layers. The W samples are cited as a particular favorite of Tomislav Zlatic of the excellent Bedroom Producer's Blog.
Thanks again to Greg Sullivan for his excellent samples of these Electric Pianos and for permission to use them to create these Kontakt instruments. Feel free to use these instruments in any projects, but if you want to do anything with the samples directly (like make an instrument in another format) please contact Greg.
As bonus here is the Street Bumper Electric Piano from Sarcyan's Musyng Kite soundfont. It's a nice sounding instrument that was in competition with the W Piano for folks that preferred to go down that Road instead. Script and Shell by Mickaël Ménager.

bigcat Maize VSTis
One of my goals is to help folks starting out or who like me are far from rich. It can be difficult to find free instruments covering an entire orchestra that sound at least passable. The Sonatina Orchestra by Mattias Westlund is probably the best sounding free Orchestra in the world, so probably the best starting place for free orchestral VSTis. While somewhat lightly sampled and lacking in more exotic articulation, these instruments have a pleasant sound and tend to blend together well. The City and Iowa Pianos also fit well in the orchestral theme.
Saxophones, Acoustic and Electric Guitar and Bass along with the Pianos should hopefully help out folks looking for the more pop oriented forms of music.
A great big thank you to VST4Free for hosting these on their site as well and for making some nice demos. Check them out for really nice free VSTis.
For some reason Maize VSTis don't always work well with FL Studio. It seems to be a problem with the Maize Sampler and not something I can fix. My apologies. You might try the SFZ versions of the Sonatina or the Kontakt versions.

Karoryfer Cello
or get it from the great Karoryfer website
The Kontakt version uses the new script and shell by Mickaël Ménager. The samples here include sustained notes, staccato notes, pizz notes, and in the usual Karoryfer tradition some bonus noises - various parts of the cello being thumped for pizz, and harmonics slides for arco. There are also two not-so-realistic mappings. One with short and long notes bowed at once, for fake marcato, and another with all the four velocity layers and both round robins of the long notes triggered at once. The total of eight layers don't sound much like a cello section, more like the world's most organic string machine.
The samples are close-miked and recorded dry and without vibrato, so it's probably not the best cello for being epic, cinematic or melodramatic, but should be very flexible for pop, EDM and rock, especially considering the Kontakt instruments include distortion and amp simulation. We ended up with 527 samples and a 155 MB download that contains both the SFZ and Kontakt versions.
Here's a demo, a fragment of the cello parts from one of Ludwik Zamenhof's tracks - he also worked on recording and editing this cello and made the glitch libraries we released earlier.
Thanks to DSmolkenfor letting me in on this cool project. He does an awesome job of recording and editing all these samples.

Project16 Bass Version 2
Some time ago, Project16 sampled his Rickenbacker 4001 Bass. Available as Kontakt and SFZ instruments, you should definitely pick them up if you haven't already. They are among the best free Basses available anywhere and I think they stack up well against commercial libraries.
Project16 redid many Fingered and Picked samples in even higher quality before a rope broke. While this session was never finished, Project16 gave me permission to use the over 1400 samples he had recorded and edited. Using the script and shell by Mickaël Ménager, I've created a new Kontakt instrument called Version 2 to differentiate it from the great Kontakt instruments created by AKJ using the original samples. The two are quite different and both are worth trying.
This instrument has over 1400 samples, every note sampled across three octaves (the top and bottom notes are stretched a bit for extended range) and 5 velocity layers.
The Keyswitches are:
C: Fingered Bridge Pickup
C#: Fingered Bridge Pickup Muted
D: Fingered Both Pickups
D#: Fingered Both Pickups Muted
E: Fingered Neck Pickup
F: Picked Bridge Pickup
G: Picked Both Pickups
A: Picked Neck Pickup

Ldk1609 Violin
This violin has a pleasant tone and a very natural sounding decay and with 250 samples and 6 articulations it is quite heavily sampled for a free instrument. Every note is sampled in a single velocity layer, though I extended the range a bit using the last high and low note.
There were some mistakes in the first version, that are now corrected.
Keystroke Articulations:
E1 - Tremolo, F1 - Arco Non-Vibrato (Default), F#1 - Arco Vibrato,
G1 - Pizzicato Non-Vibrato, G#1 - Pizzicato Vibrato, A1 - Spiccato
I was browsing Freesound.org (great site) and found these lovely violin samples from professional violinist, ldk1609. He kindly place them under Creative Commons 0 or Public Domain status meaning you can use this instrument for any purpose, with only the request to give attribution to ldk1609 @ www.freesound.org.

Quartertone Guitar
With 5 velocity layers, the Quartertone Guitar is a nice mix of aggressive sounds at the higher velocity layers as you can hear in the Bill Bailey Demo and gentler tones in the middle velocity layers as you can hear in the Arabesque Demo. There are 144 samples with a mix of every note and every other note sampled, except for the last note which I stretched to give extended range.
I found these samples browsing through Freesound.org. They were created by Quartertone from a Yamaha Eterna classical acoustic guitar, recorded with a CAD E100 microphone and are finger-plucked note performances.
They are licensed Creative Commons Attribution and can be used for any purpose including commercial. Please credit Quartertone.

Bits and Pieces
Well my aging parents got burned out of their home and trying to find them an assisted living place where they will actually go is proving tough. I'm discovering you need either time or money to make this work and they / I have neither. Sigh.
With no real updates, the blog topped 250,000 page views. Thanks for dropping by. Sorry there isn't anything new to see.
As I muddle about and make little instruments for myself in my quasi retired break time (its hard to break the habit), I'll share a few in this post.

Messing about with a (hopefully) decent quality instrument for string section type parts in my little Christmas album and thought I'd share the results. The lead instruments are the Ldk1609 Violin used in SSO and the Cello and Bass from MSLP combined with the violin, viola, celli and bass sections from SSO. It's intended to be for backup string tracks where you don't feel like putting in a lot of work but want something that sounds realer than a synth patch. At 100 megs its fairly small, though it will eat up some voices. Any feedback is appreciated.

This is a weird but fun sound. From a Gamelan with the samples dropped in the closest notes (most are pretty close) and then stretched to include every note in a two octave range. It comes from The Museum Nusantara in Delft, the Netherlands, 100 years old Javanese gamelan, Kyahi Paridjata.
These samples are made available under the GPL, i.e., you can use them for whatever you want, but if you redistribute them in another form you should provide the original samples, and allow the recipient to redistribute these as well. Free Sound Instruments
Freesound.org has lots of fun Public Domain and Creative Commons sounds that have been uploaded by the community. As you can imagine this is right up my street. I've used some before to make instruments, but I thought I'd put them all in the same place.
There is something called the Pablo Project which i don't understand on Freesound. It seems to involve uploading both good and bad samples of various instruments. I assembled the better sounding Violin samples from Kake85 into this little Kontakt instrument. It uses the WIPs script to add legato and vibrato.
TVerse put up a fun sample set called Bubblesound Octature Bass Multi Samples. I shortened it to Bubbles. He was kind enough to place the samples in the Public Domain and the instrument is the same, use it for anything you like.
Francesco Da Pyjama suggested this Kayageum from samples created by Spt3125. The samples were placed in the Public Domain as is this instrument, so you can use it for anything you like. Be warned that I recently updated Kontakt because none of the Komplete instruments would work, so you will need the latest version too.

Another request was for the GMB Gamelan. Sampled by anamorphosi, the samples are Sampling+ which seems like an earlier CC license and requests attribution. So use for anything you like but please credit anamorphosi.
Another nice FreeSounds instrument is the Ldk1609 Violin. I just put out a new and improved version... aka I fixed some mistakes.
The Quartertone Guitar is yet another FreeSounds creation. Some have criticized it, but its also been downloaded a lot for the limited time its been up. As with most digital guitars, a good amp helps.

This Indonesian instrument features Gongs in Dark Blue on the bass end of the keyboard, Jegog in the middle in Green and Kantilan on the treble end in Light Blue. In general the Jegog and Kantilan have been put on the nearest white key. They don't conform to the western scale, so this is to give you a general idea of where the sounds are relative to each other and an approximation to the western scale. The lower two gongs are about correct, the upper two gongs are placed next to them for convenience.
Oddly I did another Gamelan about a year ago. You can find it here.

Project 16 Sherwood Guitar
Some time ago I was fortunate enough to work with Project 16's great bass samples on a Kontakt instrument. He mentioned to me that he had sampled his Sherwood guitar, but I was taking a break at the time with some shoulder problems so I never worked with these samples. I've also wanted to do more guitars with the script and shell that Mickaël Ménager has allowed me to use. His scripting of great effects works really well with electric band instruments like guitar, bass and electric piano.
So I decided to see what I remembered about making instruments and here is the result. The guitar is fully sampled (though I stretched the notes on the ends) and has 5 velocity layers. I made a few errors that I hope I've ironed out. It's been a while since I've worked with this many samples and this rather complex (for me) shell. If you find any problems please yell and I'll try to get them fixed.

QuarterTone Rhythm Section
I really don't understand drums, but these great Samples by Quatertone made me want to give them a try. If you can give them a test it would be much appreciated. There are over 2500 samples. The mod wheel controls the pitch of the Kick, Snares and Toms. The lower the mod wheel, the lower the pitch. Check this as when Kontakt loads up for me the mod wheel is always down giving the lowest pitch by default. The keyswitches alter the sound quite a lot. In general the lower white keyswitches are a louder more open sound while the black keys give things like a Cross Stick Strike. Be warned this is almost a gig download and takes about 500 megs of memory.

As an old radio guy who loves old time radio, sound effects have always had a special place in my heart. I've done a few sound effects instruments in the past and Sarcyan's Musyng Kite soundfont collection has many more. However I have an itch to make a collection all in one place. I've collected the old sound effects and given some of them a facelift and started adding a few new ones. These are all for Kontakt 5.
