The endlessly amazing DSmolken has been very busy creating some cool and distinctive instruments. Check out his site. Recently he posted fun stuff on KVR.

Being me, I had to try Kontakting some of the samples of the nice lady. This is very experimental and a first attempt.

Here are the keyswitches. Each sound is mapped across 4 octaves.

B - C1, C - C#1, Ch - D1, D - D#1, F - E1, G - F1, H - F#1, J - G1, L - G#1, M - A1, N - A#1, Ng - B1, P - C2, R - C#2, S - D2, Sh - D#2, T - E2, Th - F2, V - F#2, W - G2, Y - G#2, Z - A2

A - C3, a - C#3, ah - D3, ea - D#3, E - E3, ee - F3, e - F#3, i - G3, O - G#3, o - A3, oo - A#3, ou - B3, ow - C4, oy - C#4, OO - D4, u - D#4, y - E4

This library is a free download, open source and royalty-free for all commercial and non-commercial use. Creative Commons. Please credit DSmolkin.

WIPS Iowa Orchestra Tuned

Here is the newest Iowa Orchestral Instrument Set.  They are tuned to 440 and use the WIPS script set. This adds Legato and Vibrato (WIPS), fake round robins (TKT), a smoother velocity scale (AET) and the samples are in tune with each other and all your other instruments. Also thanks to WIPS you can use a breath controller if you have one. With a few exceptions, these instruments have almost every note sampled in 3 velocity layers and roughly 100 samples each.

WIPS Iowa Orchestra

The Brass Section
Trumpet     Tenor Trombone     Bass Trombone     Horn     Tuba

The Woodwind Section
Alto Flute   Flute  Bass Flute   Oboe
Bb Clarinet   Eb Clarinet  Bass Clarinet   Bassoon
Soprano Sax      Alto Sax

The String Section
Viola   Double Bass

These instruments are the Iowa samples that are tuned, but don't have the WIPs script added. They are Kontakt monoliths, so each instrument is a single file. If you are playing from keyboard or using midis and don't need the legato or vibrato functions, these might be more to your liking.

Tuned Iowa Orchestra

The Brass Section
Trumpet     Tenor Trombone     Bass Trombone     Horn     Tuba

The Woodwind Section
Alto Flute      Flute     Bass Flute      Oboe
Eb Clarinet    Bb Clarinet    Bass Clarinet    Bassoon
Soprano Sax     Alto Sax

The String Section
Violin    Viola    Cello    Double Bass

Thanks to the kindness of Lawrence Fritts and the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios team these samples and instruments are in the public domain. You can do anything you like with them. Thanks to Blackhole12 for editing the samples which was no small feat.

Sin Night Analog Synth

Sin Night posted samples from his analog monosynth on KVR.  He kindly gave me permission to create Kontakt instruments using his samples. Here is the first one.  Script and Shell by Mickaël Ménager.

There are lots of squares and saws in the 12 presets. They are arranged with 3 squares first, then 3 saws, square + saw, saw + square, double squares and finally double saws. The are over 500 samples with every note sampled in one velocity layer.

You are allowed to use them in your music without restriction, but don't share the individual samples or make instruments out of them without permission from Sin Night.
Here is the original readme file text .

"These samples are free.
You can use them royalty-free for music production (including commercial music).
You’re not allowed to share these samples without prior written consent (so no derivative product, like sample libraries, without prior consent).

City Piano - Tuned

I spent the morning tuning my personal version of the Baldwin Piano I sampled some time ago. Its the warm and fuzzy version, not the crisper and cleaner version, though I should tune it too. I think it's a bit more harmonious now and should fit better with other 440 tuned instruments like the Iowa stuff I've been tuning ( a few posts down). Its got a bit newer script and AET velocity morph to smooth out the velocity layers which will hopefully make it sound more like the Addictive Keys pianos I've been messing with (best 29 bucks I ever spent). There are a couple less samples as I dropped a few that were driving me nuts. Still over 400 samples, almost every note sampled in 4 velocity layers.

Open Source Drumkit

Over at KVR, they have a thread.  It is about this Open Source Drumkit.

The readme says
"THE OPEN SOURCE DRUM KIT by Real Music Media - www.realmusicmedia.net
Mapped by BaardW (Tjuvdalen, Norway) v 1.0 feb 2010 - www.trelyd.org
Partially based on the mappings by SWTrex and herodotus
The samples and the mappings are completely in the public domain."

So I tried making a Kontakt 5 instrument out of it. Its pretty lightweight at about 120 megs. See what you think. OK cranked up the crash and ride. Take 2.

Here's a list a couple hundred bigcat Kontakt freebies.

Here's a list of lots of complete freebies from all over the net that don't need Kontakt.

Or lists of pianos, electric pianos, guitars, basses and drums from around the net that may or may not need Kontakt.

Please stop using bigt VSTis!

It has come to my attention that the VSTis that I made can cause problems. They blew out someone's speakers in their headphones and obviously didn't do his ears any good. Please stop using them and delete them.

My apologies for any problems or inconvenience. I purchased a VSTi maker with the intent of helping the community, but obviously something didn't work right. I'll continue to slowly and sporadically make free instruments for Kontakt and maybe at some point I can expand to another format, hopefully one that is totally free.

I'm not aware of any problems like this with Kontakt or other versions of the instruments here on the blog.

Vospi's City Piano

A cool chap named Vospi who I met on Reddit kindly reworked the Clean City Piano. He tightened it up and added a bit of room IR. Now in its fourth version thanks to the help of many folks, I think this is the best the City Piano has ever sounded. It is free and entirely public domain.

B Pad

A long time ago I made a little Kontakt instrument called A Pad.  Its been improved a bit and called "B Pad". So clever I know. A number of my friends have helped me create and then update the interface. Thanks guys.

It still works the same way. Name any wave file "A Pad.wav" and drop it into the B Pad Samples directory replacing the public domain demo sound from OLPC. Kick up the B Pad Kontakt instrument and there is your new pad with fiddley EQ, Reverb and Envelope Knobs on. Any sound becomes an instrument (of sorts).
You can also change the picture with another one roughly 640 * 250 in png format. Just click the wrench on the upper left, go to "Instrument Options", "Instrument" and then "Browse" for your Instrument Wallpaper. Feel free to free name it anything you like. It's totally public domain and you don't need to credit anyone.

If you want to mess about with the magnificent WIPs scripts from Robert D. Villwock, aka Big Bob. I've made a second B Pad that includes the WIPs scripts and resources and such. Big Bob is the creator of these excellent scripts and they are in no way modified, just included in the instrument.

Apparitions

This instrument is from Brandon Clark. Let's let him describe it.
"Apparitions is my first excursion into the world of instrument development in Kontakt 5 using Joe Steven's generously made "B Pad." The sounds are dark and slightly cinematic in nature. Made from scratch, and free to use."

This instrument is Public Domain and free for any use.

Thanks a million

The Mediafire download counter went over a million. Thanks to everybody who has given these instruments a try. I hope you found something you liked.

This is a golden age of free instruments and its fun to be a small part of it. Karoryfer and Ivy have made some of the best freebies I have ever heard and Bedroom Producers Blog tracks all the best ones. It seems every week something pops up or I bump into a great free instrument I never knew about. While Orchestral instruments are still tough to find for free, the Band instruments for the Rock and Roll seem to be proliferating and improving.

Thanks so much to the folks who have created GUIs and scripts for me. All the GUIs and scripts here were created for me by others, as I have no talent in that area. I've been fortunate to collaborate with some awesome people.

Predecessor Instruments

A thread over on KVR about baroque instruments got me thinking about all the instruments that have gone before our modern orchestral and band instruments. So being me I thought I would try to make a post with some little instruments and links to a simpler day when more people ate mud and played harpsichords. Here are a few Kontakt instruments. If I can find any other samples I'll try to make more.

This Carillon was sampled many years ago. The original site is now defunct, but Soni Musicae saved the original samples, along with making an instrument. So thanks to them we have this nice Carillon.

I found some neat samples on FreeSound.org. These are very lightly sampled as these were generally folks just providing a couple samples for fun.

This Oud has 17 samples, one for almost every note. It is apparently the ancestor of the English Lute. Fantom57 seems to have done a lot of work to get these sounding really good. Please credit him if you use this.

Just a little fun instrument with all of four samples, but a cool tone. Please credit Juskiddink if you use it on your million selling album. Check Sasje's Crumbhorn for a more fully sampled instrument.

Be a medieval bell ringer with these cool samples from Wuola. Please credit him.

For the admittedly too busy background, I used an illuminated manuscript from The British Library.

The brilliant gentlewoman Sasje has several instruments in this vein. The Viola Da Gamba seems incredibly hard to find even from commercial sources.

Also old bigcat has a few pipe organs which are kind of the predecessor to lots of modern keyboard instruments. Bureu Organ, Saint Augustine's Organ and Burea Funeral Organ.

Soni Musicae is a great site. They have two free harpsichords and other cool stuff, including a brilliant piano in Giga that you can convert to Kontakt.

The Beskhu Collection

The fun thing about cruising FreeSound.org is that you often find things completely unexpectedly. I was looking for a lute, which so far has been futile, when I came across the samples of Beskhu. As you've noticed I like pianos and Beskhu has sampled a nice parlor type piano that sound something like the one in my house when I was a kid. Plus he sampled the piano plucked by fingers and all kinds of other fun things. I've started with Kontakting the piano samples and will add others as I figure out what to do with them.

Upright Soundcloud       Plucked Soundcloud

The Upright Piano has every note sampled across the 88 key range with one velocity layer. The Plucked Piano has the bass and midrange but is missing the highest octaves, though I did stretch the top note a bit. For the Schroeder in you, the toy piano is a cute little thing and the black keys aren't just painted on. Linus would love the toy xylophone. Largely because it would drive Lucy bonkers.

What a name! Anyone have any knowledge of this instrument? I've read variously that it is simply another name for the Bassoon or that it is the predecessor to the Bassoon or that is is related to the Dulcian. Or all of the above.

I think this is an African finger piano? The sound is sort of a small hammer tapping tuned wires. It is a fun little instrument at all of 2 megs. I tried to make percussive and sweet articulations along with the normal one.

Beskhu's samples fall under the Creative Commons License. you can do anything you like with them, but please give him credit.

This piano ain't right. Other pianos are beautifully sampled with so many tens of thousands of samples that they have to ship on terabyte hard drives. This piano ain't. Other pianos are carefully played by professionals or even machines calibrated to give 128 velocity layers. This piano ain't. Other pianos are better than you, designed for virtuoso players. This piano ain't.

Great Courses Plus Beta

I've enjoyed the Great Courses for years. They offer college level courses covering all the major areas like History (my favorite), English and Science. One of their best areas is music thanks to the brilliant Professor Robert Greenberg. The man is amazing and entertaining. His course "How to Listen to and Understand Great Music" is one of the best histories of music ever. Sorry to rave but he is that good.
Anyway I got to join the Beta of their new streaming service from a code given to me by one of their professors. So I asked if I could get my own code to give out and they said yes, much to my surprise.

So go to www.thegreatcoursesplus.com/landing and enter the code "BIGCAT" without the quotes.

Note that you will need to enter a valid email and a credit card number or you can go through Amazon. You will not be charged. You get an email that says there is a Zero charge to your card. When the beta is over you simply lose access, again no charge.

Obviously since this is a beta they would like feedback and will probably send a survey or two to your email. In my experience, the stream works really well and is about the same as Netflix in data streaming and quality. You can stream to computer or Android and probably the Ipad/phone empire, but I don't have one of those. Eventually they are going to add Roku. I'm pumped about that.

There are a couple music courses. As mentioned if you like history and music or just want to check out who Bach was (you know Father of Music) try "How to Listen to and Understand Great Music" by Greenberg. He also has one on Piano Works and you can guess I like that one. Greenberg does Great Orchestral Works and Opera as well. No offense, but I'm skipping the Opera!

Another interesting one is on Math and Music. Its by Doctor David Kung and includes things like composing with Math and digital music delivery. It made my head hurt at points, but worth taking.

The University of Iowa samples are probably the most famous public domain sounds and fortunately Blackhole12 edited many of them into individual notes. Some of notes are a tad out of tune and eventually I might try to do a bit of tuning on them. Generally I think they sound quite nice and appreciate the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios and their Director, Lawrence Fritts, creating them and making them available as Public Domain samples.

The String section is really the only thing that doesn't work very well at all. Blackhole12 I think gave up on it as there really aren't enough Violin or Cello samples to make an instrument. Fortunately Lawrence Fitts re-recorded the entire string section in 2012. At some point when I'm up to some serious editing work, I'd like to play with them.

The Brass Section
Trumpet     Tenor Trombone     Bass Trombone     Horn     Tuba

The Woodwind Section
Alto Flute      Flute     Bass Flute      Oboe

Viola       Double Bass

I'm slowly working on tuning all the instruments.
You can find the ones I've done so far here.

Thanks to the kindness of Lawrence Fritts and the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios team these samples and instruments are in the public domain. You can do anything you like with them. Thanks to Blackhole12 for editing the samples which was no small feat.

Newish bits and pieces from things I'll probably put out 'officially' on Black Friday or maybe Christmas. Mostly re-works of the great Sonatina Orchestra by Mattias Westlund as I keep trying to improve my orchestral instruments. Also slowly adding in the Iowa Orchestra that I digitally tuned to the Maize VSTi collection.

Sonatina Brass Section with the WIPS scripts for Kontakt.
Adds fake legato, vibrato and round robins along with the ability to use a breath controller and a newer GUI with 20 reverbs. Thanks to my buddy for the script.
A chap at the Reaper forums suggested adding WIPs to Sonatina. I'll try to get around the the Woodwinds and String section this month. This also lets me add in my newer GUI and shrink the number of instruments down by combining some articulations.

Sonatina String Trio for Kontakt
The Photosynthesis Engine by Jeremiah Pena is a neat Kontakt GUI/script thingie that lets you layer three sounds and mix and mangle them. I used an older version to combine the Violin, Viola and Cello from the Sonatina Orchestra (what's new) into a sort of string trio. I need to figure out the newer version of the engine and have more fun messing with it.

The alto flute has been out quite a while, but I've been adding in the regular and bass flutes. The University of Iowa samples are a great resource, but have a few issues. The woodwinds and brass aren't bad when tuned up a bit, but the strings never quite worked. A chap named Blackhole12 edited and posted the samples as individual notes.

Taylor Sampled Synths for Kontakt

Axis 80   Part 1    Part 2    Part 3

Richard Taylor did a great job sampling analog synths and the nice folks at Freesound.org are hosting them. They were placed in the public domain which was very generous of Richard Taylor.
I'm calling the first one Axis 80 so as not to get sued, read about the real thing here. It has over 30 presets and weighs in at a touch under 2 gigs.
The second is a smaller synth that is still in production, so I'm being obscure with the name Janssen Havoc. It is 250 megs with 10 presets.
Up next is the Payara psia with 14 presets of analogue goodness in about a gig.
I used Mickaël Ménager's great script and GUI, so you can add effects like Tremolo, Phaser, Reverb and Distortion along with using half a dozen amps.

Adventure Kid Waveforms for Kontakt

AKWF The First Attempt
Adventure Kid is Kristoffer Ekstrand and he has sampled many wave forms and placed them in the public domain because he is cool like that.
